Upcoming Lunar Eclipse

Hi y'all, what are you guys plan for the lunar eclipse on Thursday ? I have looked at the weather forecast, it seemed quite gloomy across the western part of continental USA. I am struggling to find a location to get any decent view. Given at the max, the moon will be 51 degrees up, I might just shoot towards the sky.

Hey Oliver, I am having the same issue. It actually isn't looking too bad down here in Southern California. Partly cloudy the last I looked. My problem is I am leaving tomorrow to head to Colorado, so I would be in Utah or Colorado on Thursday night. And the forecast for there is solid clouds, snow, etc... I have tried looking both North and South as I could take the I-80 or I could take the I-40, but both show lot's of clouds and bad weather.

I may just call it a wrap now and not worry about it.

If the clouds magically clear I'll probably head to the Marin headlands and shoot the moon over the golden gate.

Since in reality it will be raining, I'll probably just sleep

Good and bad news this side of the pond. Good news the forecast is for clear skies. The bad news is the eclipse is happening at moonset. In fact it is not quite total at moonset however I could walk up a small hill 1 minute from home and watch it happen setting over the distant Scottish hills. A better idea is to get up earlier and drive to the coast about 30 miles away and watch the moon set over the sea and the distant Scottish hills, that might be spectacular and if it was fully eclipsed I would do it but I am not sure if an almost full eclipse is worth losing that much sleep. Yeah, you won't see it fully over there. I will say I did capture the moon being eclipsed towards sunrise as it was setting a few years ago and it still turned out pretty nice. I went to the beach with your idea and it looked pretty cool with the light of the moon also reflecting off the water. But it may not be enough of an eclipse on your side for that.

Of course, even if you can't see the eclipse fully, photos of the full moon setting can be pretty cool too. If the partial eclipse dims the moon at all for you, it will make the moon easier to expose and not so bright compared to the ground.

Yeah, that's the risk there on the coast of a marine layer along the horizon. But.... it could be awesome!!!

Ok... I am heading to Kansas for the Lunar Eclipse. I just got to Albuquerque, so I have about 8 hours more to drive to get to a spot I picked out on a map. I will get there right after sunset if I don't fool around too much on the way there. I have never been there so I would prefer to have some light out still.

My daughter is expecting me today in Northern Colorado, so I need to let her know I am taking a detour to Kansas on the way.
