Vareid Pools and Mountains

Vareid is a nice area to explore in Lofoten, with views of the mountains across the fjord and some interesting rocks in the foreground. We went there for a sunrise one morning (that never quite materialized) and returned mid-morning on another day. Here are some views.

1) Sunrise - the tide was relatively high and there was a lot of fresh snow making it hard to take advantage of the rocks in the foreground. I never did get water motion that I felt helped the image. I did like the light on the mountains though.

2) When we returned on another day the water was lower and we were able to explore some tidepools. I liked the lines in the rocks on this one.

3) I had to at least try to get a reflection, so this is with my camera completely flat at the base of the pool.

As always, any thoughts are welcome.

Gee - a sunrise with no color. I can easily relate to that. You still got some nice captures out of the morning however with the second and last images really being the standouts for my eyes. I like the light and the foreground in both of those images. The first one leaves me wishing you had an ND10 (or more) filter to fully smooth out the water. The wave action isn't really enough to keep me interested but totally smoothing it out might have been a neat result.

I agree about the ND. It was in my bag. I had a vision in my head about trying to get some nice breaking waves but they looked a lot better in person than through the lens.

Wow Kyle! What a cool place. A sunrise with colors might have been nice, but I think sometimes sunrise or sunset colors can distract from a scene.

I really like #1, it's my favorite of these as I really like the patterns the white snow makes on those rocks in the foreground. For myself, I am glad you didn't use an ND filter to smooth the water out, I actually like the wave. But then I tend not to care for milky/foggy water looks.

#3 is cool with the reflection, and thanks for sharing the behind the scenes look of how you took it.

For anyone still looking, here's another composition. A little more reflection than #2 and a little more foreground than #3.

#1 and your latest post are my favorites. The leading lines of the snow covered rocks really work for me in #1 and the hint of color in the reflection in the latest are what my eyes like.
