Waterfall Wednesday 5/14/2025

My falls for today are a serious throwback to quite a few yesterdays ago. This is a shot of Navajo Falls on Havasu Creek just downstream from Supai village as they appeared when I shot this with a Minolta twin lens reflex camera in 1967. This was actually the first time I had seen big waterfalls that weren't surrounded by concrete which were common around Phoenix.

I decided to double check the name of these falls while I was processing this and things got confusing in a hurry. As it turns out the original Navajo Falls were well off to the right of the falls seen here. There was a major flash flood in 1910 that diverted the creek to this location right along the trail leading downstream from the village. There was another major flash flood in 2008 that re-diverted the creek back to its original location which is what all of the online images I could find showed for Navajo Falls.

So is this a scan from 120 negative film? Impressive flow in such a dry area. And the turquoise color at the base of the falls is lovely!

Thanks - actually a scan from a 120 slide as I was shooting Ektachrome back then. Havasu Canyon is famous for the blue-green water.

You aren't kidding about the 'serious throw back'. Nice looking falls.

Here are a couple from the Oregon coast from last month. Hug Point and Oswald West State Park.

Falls at Hug Point, early morning (had it all to myself)

Blumenthal Falls at Short Sand Beach, Oswald West State Park
Nice area to play in both for nice coastal sunrises/sunsets and water features like these. The trail leading down the Sand Beach in the Oswald West Park is pretty nice too. Good shots of the falls.

This was at the end of one of the pleasant side canyon hikes I did while exploring the bottom of the Grand Canyon on a raft last month. I don't remember the name of the place but I'm working on finding out.

I returned to the same location as last weeks image and tried again. This time merging a faster shot 1/8s in with the usual 1/3s allowing more texture to show in the fast moving parts. Ken
