Waterfall Wednesday 7/30/2025

Normally I strive to get a "perfect" shutter speed when shooting a waterfall to get a smooth texture with the flowing water. While shooting some waterfowl on Mirror Lake in the Columbia River Gorge last February I aimed my camera up and grabbed a shot of Palisades Falls. I was at a side angle to the falls as they weren't my subject focus that morning so I hadn't changed my shutter speed and ended up with a stop action capture at 1/2000s. I decided it was kind of unique so worked it up for my weekly waterfall scene.

From 2 weeks ago, here is Beaver Falls near Clatskanie, Oregon. It shows a very low flow in this photo, but in spring run off the creek is several times wider going over this big drop. A less than half mile hike gets you into this amphitheater, but it's a little bit sketchy, with ropes tied around trees to help you through several washed out parts. My wife complained throughout the hike and vowed to never return here, so I'll be a solo hiker when I return next spring for the full flow show.

I like the delicate summer flow in this scene. Sometimes the firehose flows during the rainy season can be a bit on the unruly side while this shot captures a very peaceful mood.

Nice vertical drop and a good shutter speed choice. Is the overall wetness around this scene from the falls or falling rain?

So here's one from Yosemite. I don't remember the name of this particular fall, but it's on the way down from Tuolumne Meadows to Glen Aulin.

Gorgeous - I love all the little cascades near the bottom that really come to life with the low flow rate and your shutter speed choice.

Thanks Alan. Its from the falls. This was taken during a time when there was no rains.
