Waves at Coal Point

The beaches on either side of Humbug Mountain just south of Port Orford are quite dark in color and the rocks are dark enough to have earned the nickname Coal Point. I find it quite unlikely that there really are coal deposits in this area since that would not be a match for the local geology at all. I have shot down at the surf along US101 in this area in the past but never got good view that would really bring the scenes to light. I knew where I wanted to try a shot like this prior to leaving Vancouver but needed light winds to make it work and I had that yesterday. Click through for a larger view.

Nice one, Alan. Looks like there might be some rip currents here.

Thanks Doug - the white area directly below my drone is actually another incoming wave. The waves weren't coming out of large swells at all but the perspective made things look more dramatic.
Actually, I am talking about the sediment in the water on the left side of the cove. Sediment in the water beyond the coast is a tip off to a rip current.

Cool. Did you shoot some lower down?
Thanks Jim - I didn't go any lower at this location. I was at 165' above my launch point but the waves were at the bottom of a cliff and I wasn't sure if there might be air currents that could impair my control. I did shoot from a lower altitude on the south side of Humbug Mountain a bit later.

Thanks Rick

What a really cool view from that birds eye view.
Thanks Jim - I told you I was going to shoot this last week.

Nice and unusual view of the waves.
Thanks Jameel.

Great image Alan. Looks like you are finding good places to fly your drone.
Thanks Ben - I have quite a few places in mind and am just getting started :)

Its hard to judge scale from a view like this but if it helps the area where the sand looks wet to the front of the next incoming wave is only about 10-12'. The swells were rather calm.
