Those are beautiful Douglas.
I do have some owl shots but had these insects ready and as I'm busy tomorrow I will post these small winged creatures from my yard this week.

Maybe a mining bee of some type.

Same bee different shot.

I think this is a Common European Greenbottle Fly

The city I live is has burrowing owls nests all over town. They have photo contests and a yearly festival honoring the Burrowing Owl. I voluteered this past weekend to do a Burrowing Owl survey. I've been looking at these guys for years and never realized there are very few with dark eyes. I only had 2 dark eyed owls in my survey area. Here are a couple of shots I took.

Here are a couple of shots of some great horned owls in Bishop, CA. A local birder friend alerted me to this scene. He reckons the baby tried to fly out of the nest, but is still too young to fly. It now hangs out on the ground or on top of one of the branches in the photo, while one of the parents sticks close by.

There's a story with the lens I used for these shots. It's a 400mm Sigma telephoto lens, but it's so old that I have to manually focus and set the aperture. I found it at an estate sale in the Bay Area a few years ago for $20. The original owner was a food photographer in the 60s and 70s.

Eric will be gone for a few weeks so I will start this off. I will back home tomorrow so I will then be able to post threads on minerals and flowers again next week.
I’m going to do owls this week.

Wow Doug!

First, thanks for helping Eric out. And what a great set of owls. I think I have only ever seen owls once or twice in my life, and here you have an awesome collection! #1 is my favorite, that's amazing color on it.

That's a great collection of bee's and such from your backyard! Great job on capturing those pesky little guys.

That looks like it might be a fritillary, Alan, but I’m not sure which one.
Your guess is better than anything I have at hand. It was the butterfly that landed in front of me while I was holding an old Canon SLR with a 75-300mm lens on. All I cared about was getting the shot :)

I think the yellow eyes on owls are a little unsettling, but the dark eyes are downright freaky!

Yes, it really freaked me out when I saw the look on this one. I only had two dark eyed out of 50. My wife also did a section of towm. Out of 109 owls she also had 2 dark eyed.
