It’s time for another Winged Wednesday! What will you share this week? Birds, insects, fish, planes—anything with wings is fair game! For this week and next, I’m featuring birds with Chestnut in their name. Chestnut is such an unusual word—aside from Chestnut Trees, Horse Chestnuts, and Chestnut Mushrooms, I rarely see it outside of bird names.

Delightful collection of chestnuts - I love the colorful markings on the Chestnut-sided Warbler and the amazing color show of the Chestnut-eared Aracari but the Chestnut-colored Woodpecker is the serious scene stealer for my eyes.

Most of my wanderings lately have been near marshes and wetlands so waterfowl are a regular feature in my viewfinder.

Great photos, Trent! I've photographed Chestnut-backed Chickadee before, but not as beautifully as you have here. Would you happen to know what caused the chestnut stain on the swan? It’s rust stains from iron in the sediment, picked up while bottom-feeding.

Thanks Eric - wouldn't a Blue-Wing Teal have a dark breast instead of white? I have been calling them Northern Pintails.

Your attempt at capturing chestnut-colored winged creatures was a huge success, Doug! The dark Dead-leaf butterfly, however, isn’t making the most of its camouflage—against a bright, colorful, velvety background, stands out like a Marine in camo working in an all-white, sterile hospital environment.

Two more great photos, Alan. It looks like this Red-necked Grebe has plenty to say about nest duty! Sitting on eggs all day and night isn’t a thrill ride—perhaps he’s filing a formal complaint with his mate about the long shift!
