My contribution to today's Winged Wednesday is the Lawrence's goldfinch. The American Goldfinch, the Lesser Goldfinch and Lawrence's goldfinch are North Americas three goldfinches.
An expected but rarely found winter visitor to Arizona from their breeding grounds in California. Usually, Lawrence's goldfinch migrate north to south in California and into Baja. Occasionally they migrate west to east and come to the arid areas of southern Arizona and Mexico; I think the male is one of the prettiest songbirds in North America. This guy is acquiring his breeding plumage. Most birds molt to get their breeding plumage. Lawrence's Goldfinch colors are revealed as tips of the gray feathers wear away showing the bright yellow.
