This is a view of the North Fork of Silver Creek as seen from the North Rim Trail in Silver Falls State Park. From a visit last Fall.

Thanks Jameel - Summer is closer to endless shades of green in these woods.

Now this is a fall color image that is starting to feel more like fall than some of the forests closer to the coast.

Thanks Ben - The big leaf maples are almost the only trees that put on a good color show west of the Cascades.

What a view! It's cool to be able to look down like this.

And to Ben's point, I think this is the most fall colors I have seen from any of your PNW photos!

Thanks Jim - Silver Falls is a bit of an oddity for NW forests in that this whole area was clear cut in the late 1800's and early 1900's. The whole place was hand replanted by the CCC in the 1930's so it's not a completely natural forest at all. The big leaf maples thrive in disturbed areas initially but get crowded out by the evergreens in the long run.

Catching the big leaf maples at peak color is a bit of a crapshoot as the peak can vary from year to year by up to almost a month and the colors are gone in less than a week. I am hoping to be down there during the week of Oct. 18th this year which is about the same time I shot this last fall.
