The Land of Giant Hoodoo's

This is a Hidden Treasure I stumbled across on my way to Monika's Crystal Geyser outside of Green River Utah. It's a short little drive, and I was focused on seeing a geyser, so when the road started running through this tumbled area of rocks, I was pleasantly surprised and just had to stop. It's not a huge area, but it's large enough. And it's an area that I will return to and use to shoot the Milky Way from.

Neat find Jim, I need to get to this road as it leads to the Maze anyway. This is only a few miles (maybe 40) from Goblin Valley.

Thanks Ben! You definitely need to check this road out then. It was a last minute drive by decision to go there, so I need to follow this road out on a map and see where else it might lead, especially if it leads to the Maze as you say. I had no idea.

Interesting roadside attraction.

If the road is the one numbered 1010 it leads down to the Flint Trail road just west of the Hans Flat Ranger Station and from there you just follow the Flint Trail down to the Maze.

Thanks Alan. I will have to look and see what the road is named or numbered again, I just followed Google Maps.

Interesting enough, the iPhone Map took me to a small road called Crystal Geyser about 3 miles from this. It was the right turn off, but the road was pretty short. When I searched on Google Maps, it took me to the actual Crystal Geyser.

OK - I just looked up where the geyser sits and that road is on the east side of the Green River so this is not the road that can lead you down to the Maze. There are no Green River crossings between I-70 and the confluence with the Colorado River to get back to the west side where the Maze sits.

There is Crystal Geyser Road, which is on the other side of the river. Accessed via the airport road, which, when one takes the left fork instead of right into the airport, takes you through Labyrinth Canyons WSA & eventually to Hans Flat RS.

That road will also take you near the Chaffin Ranch Geyser which is just north of the San Rafael Bridge along Road 1010 (AKA Lower San Rafael Rd).

Great find ! In your opinion, what' s the road like to drive on in the Winter & Spring, up to the Labyrinth Canyons Campground? Will small SUVs like Honda CRVs get by ? It looks unpaved, nothing bumpy though.

Thanks.

Oliver, the Labyrinth Canyon campgrounds are accessed from the Moab/Island in the Sky side. All of those clay roads can turn very slick with rain.
