It is time to look at some minerals.

Banded Iron Formation consisting of Jasper (red), Hematite (gray), and Yellow (Tiger-eye) from Brookman Mountain, Australia.

Pyrite on black shale. These are found in the spoils from coal mining near Dwight, IL.

Bornite (purplish), also known as Peacock Ore from the copper mines of Butte Montana. The gold color is Chalcopyrite.

Wow - lighting is everything with that first image of the banded iron - that is just amazing. The pyrite is equally interesting with the shapes on the surface and the colors in the bornite are really cool.

I'm glad you enjoy these, Alan. Seeing specimens like these when I was a kid is what drove me into geology as a profession.

Thanks, Oliver. That banded iron formation is a rather unusual one. Tiger-eye is not typically found in this situation. I walked into a rock shop in South Dakota and there were several specimens sitting on a shelf priced way below the typical selling point. Needless to say, I snapped them up.
