Trona Pinnacles

Living in Bishop, I'm close to a lot of cool stuff. This is the Trona Pinnacles, a collection of tufa towers on the south side of Death Valley National Park near the stinky town of Trona. At one time in the past, this part of Searles Valley was under as much as 700 feet of water. These days, the Searles Valley is a mecca for mineral and gemstone hunters. The Trona Pinnacles are similar to the tufas at Mono Lake, and this is a fantastic spot for camping (but not in the dead of winter). Just watch out for desert tortoise.

A friend and I went there late last year specifically to shoot the full moonrise and sunrise.

Hey Michael,

Trona is a favorite place of mine, I get out there a couple of times a year. It's great to see you have been there too.

Great job with both photos. I have also gone out there in the past to capture the full moonset/rise. It's fun! I like the look of #1, but I also really like how you composed #2.

Great set, I like both. The first for the moon and nice sky color, the second for the light on the pinnacles.

Last time I was in Trona was about 1969 for a motorcycle enduro from Trona to Ballarat and back.

Cool! We visited Ballarat on the way to Trona. Do you remember what kind of motorcycle you rode?

Thanks, Jim. I was surprised there weren’t more photographers out there that day. Have you shared your photos of the Pinnacles here?
