My parents and I met in Yosemite National Park before dawn this past weekend to hike Clouds Rest, a peak just below 10,000 feet in elevation which provides breathtaking views of Yosemite Valley and the surrounding mountains. This was their third attempt and my first.
The work it took to get to the summit made me a tad loopy. I felt a little emotional seeing that view and my eyes got slightly teary. At the same time, I giggled to myself for a few moments.
The effort destroyed all of us, mom especially. The water bladder in her backpack had some kind of soapy film in it, which caused her body to expel anything she tried to eat or drink. Not being able to eat or drink anything over a 15-mile hike is…not ideal. She felt better once she ingested Pepto Bismol and applesauce. That evening the three of us enjoyed red wine and T-bone steak.
Today is the first day my body feels back to normal. My hips were angry for a few days. But the physical soreness was all worth it for views like this.
I’ve included a family photo inspired by @Bob Israel and his son’s trip through Glacier National Park.
