Planning a few days around the Anchorage area mid may. Have some family visiting from overseas and want to visit Alaska. WIll have opportunity to capture some landscapes there. This is my first trip to that state (strange I know).

So those of you who have been there, please suggest locations.

Thanks

Actually I think most people haven't been to Alaska. I have been there though. :) I will have to write up a few notes later today.

We took a nice drive around the Turnagain arm and toward Kenai. My experience around Anchorage was heading south (eventually going to Katmai) rather than north.

I can recommend the Eagle River sanctuary. Saw several moose there and it has some nice, easy, trails along the river with views of the mountains.

Thanks Kyle. Looks like a good place to target. Contemplating an overnight trip to Denali. Something you'd recommend?

Can’t wait to see your Alaskan images (never been there myself).

Had an interesting few days and heading back home today. It was primarily a family vacation with my siblings and their spouses. Got to explore this amazing place and squeeze in some photo ops. Will definitely have to plan another trip at some point soon. The weather was quite a mix of rain sun and cloudy. Very windy at times.

Will post some when I get a chance to process this in the next few days.

Alaska is huge and quite wonderful. Been there twice, though never stayed around Anchorage. Glacier Bay near Juneau is great, and I also saw the south end of Katmai. Sorry, I don't do cities.

That is definitely going to be my next destination. Didn’t witness light like this. I don’t do cities either. Explored from the turnagain arm all the way to Seward.

Also @Jeffrey, what is a good time of the year for dramatic lights. I am already thinking of a follow on trip focused more on photography.
The two visits for me were in June and early Sept. I thought the light was better in September, as you see in my post. But, it's always a crapshoot with nature, as we all know too well.

yes I am.
Where did you go there?

As to your question about sunsets/sunrises. I will say that when I was there, which was during May, the thing that struck me the most was how the sunset lasted a good 2 hours. That's with the clouds with color. I remember often being able to capture the sunset in 3 or 4 different places on the same night because it would last so long. You could exhaust all of the possible compositions in one location and then go and drive 5 miles down the road to the next sight and then shoot more sunset colors. It was amazing.

I explored AK-1 south from Anchorage to Seward and AK-1 north from Anchorage to Glacier view.

As to sunset lasting a long time, my experience is more on the lines of 30mins or so rather than 2 hours. I had a couple of mild sunsets, nothing intense and spectacular. The other days were cloudy with thick clouds towards where the sun was setting. That said the scenery is fantastic for miles on end.

I'll be posting some images soon.
