Friday's Focus - Milky Way

Jim, while both of those are very nice, the second is quite unique - I've never seen a picture like it - makes me want to go for a midnight swim! That Coal Mine Canyon shot is great Bob - nice light to show the landscape (without painting it) with the MW nicely visible. I take it this is dawn. I don't quite understand the pink light on the distant peak though - that can't be sunrise can it? If so I assume you blended in an earlier sky.

Mine is dawn from the summit of Dege Pk. in Mt. Rainier NP. Not the most vibrant stars, but the shot is about the mountain.

I will confess in advance that Milky Way shots are not a specialty for me at all so no way I can match the stuff already posted. That said I did manage to get a view of it in spite of the local light pollution at Facerock Park in Bandon. The light on the sea stacks is from the parking lot at a Bandon Hotel along the beach.

Here is another one from up at Mt Rainier, and that is the moon setting. I had to wait for it to get low enough that it wasn't washing out the stars and Milky Way. Looking back, it's kind of amazing that I did get such detail in the Milky Way with the moon, but I don't think it was a full moon, even though it looks round, I am pretty sure it was a partial moon. Also the clouds on the horizon felt thicker then they look.

So you are looking south in this shot? Is that Mt. St. Helens and the lights of Portland directly below the MW here?

Hey Bob, I like all of these, your Coal Mine Canyon one is really cool. And your Milky Way shot with the Stop sign is very creative and made me laugh a bit with the Stop sign and all it could imply in the shot.
Jim,
Yes, the stop sign shot was just for fun and a bit creative. I titled it "Stop entering the Twilight Zone ahead".

Jim,
Here is a few favorites of the Milky Way. The First is at Coal Mine Canyon, second at Courthouse Butte Sedona, and the third is just for fun.View attachment 6631View attachment 6632View attachment 6633

Jim,
The Coal Mine Canyon shot was at sunset but not total darkness because I wanted to capture the Milky Way and the canyon in one shot. If I remember correctly I captured that about an hour after sunset in October so the Milky Way was only up for a very short time after sunset.

Here's one I don't think I've shared here before from Olmsted Point...
