Another one bites the dust

After a fun shooting session of the Milky Way and meteors with Monika last night and we were putting our gear away, somehow my tripod fell over with the camera smashing lens first into the concrete. So my Sigma 14mm f1.8 has shot its last Milky Way.

I finally just contacted Squaretrade and am waiting for a response so I can send it in.

That Sigma 14mm was obviously my only lens I used on my D850 at night since it is a game changing lens.

Always sad news when a tripod falls, but even worse when the damage is more than superficial.

Yikes. That looks like it hit glass first. I have dropped some lenses but not with that much damage. Will Squaretrade do a full replacement?

Yep, well I think it might have hit the lower lens hood pedal, but that much weight on that thin plastic, the hood doesn’t stand a chance.

Yep, they either repair or replace. I am sure in this case they will replace it. I started a few years back after my D700 went swimming in the ocean to make sure I always buy the accident insurance when I buy new gear. At least for 3 or 4 years I am protected.

You can also get your camera gear insured through regular insurance companies. I have a personal item coverage policy for all of my photo gear through the same company that does my homeowner's policy (State Farm).

I used State Farm for a long time as an add on. I broke the sensor in my 1DS mk3 while cleaning it and it cost $2100 to replace. They paid full coverage. But two years later they dropped my coverage. I was sure glad I had it, but I have been going uninsured since then.

I have no idea, and, hopefully, it won't happen again, but it would be worth asking about.

Since this got brought back up, let me say that the Lens ended up being repaired and not replaced. So far it checked out perfect in the house when I checked for sharpness in the corners with some test charts I have. I still haven't shot it outdoors, but I would think it's fine. The only thing I did notice was the focus ring was a little stiffer then before. But seeing as I really only use it at night, having the focus ring being a little tighter and not as apt to accidently move is a bit of a bonus.
