Here are three more minerals from my collection. Sorry for the late post. I was down in Phoenix with my grandkids today.
Apatite and Calcite
Intertwined Pyrite Cubes
Adamite (yellowish green), Calcite (white), and Limonite (brown).
I apologize for this being tardy. I have been swamped with work at home. Todays' flowers are from prairies. Prairies are certainly one of the most beautiful places to photograph flowers in spring, summer, and fall. I miss that, having lived in Arizona for 20 years now. Here are some...
We had a forecast of 87%-100% monsoon storm coverage today. We have had great chances for storms for the past week, but everything seems to go around us. This storm went around us as well, but I was able to get this classic image of a monsoon storm cell with my iPhone.
It's time for another round of minerals and some general education about asbestos. Joshua don't hesitate to pile on.
Below is the mineral Chrysotile, the most common form of asbestos. Notice that this is a very fibrous, silky mineral. Most of asbestos applications in the U S were of this...
Cactus flowers are among the most beautiful of all plants. Here are some that you have probably never seen. Please pile on with your flower images.
Arizona Barrel Cactus
Organ Pipe Cactus
Hedgehog Cactus
Pin Cushion Cactus
Beehive Cactus
Guy Schmickle and I decided to go to the Grand Canyon and attempt to catch some great images of the monsoon thunderstorms. We had incredible luck the last time we tried it. Unfortunately, there were so many storms that they created too many shadows, so the overall light was not so good. There...
Here are some more specimens of minerals from my collection.
Dolomite (pink), with chalcopyrite crystals (brass colored).
Aurichalcite (aqua) incased in Limonite.
Calcite and Fluorite crystals.
Paintbrush genera are one of the most ubiquitous plants in the U S. There are 157 different species, and they are found in every one of the 48 conterminous states. The range of colors are highly varied as well. Here are a few representatives. Notice the subtle differences in colors of...
I am running out of mineral specimens to show here so I am approaching the end of mineral threads.
Josh Fox, please add some of your specimens to this thread.
Quartz crystals atop Sphalerite crystals from Peru.
An unusual piece of black petrified wood. It was formed in a strong reducing...
It won't be long before I have run out of minerals from my collection to present here. If you are a lover of rocks and minerals and have images to share, please do so in this thread. This would include images that include the colorful rocks on the shores of Lake McDonald in Glacier National...
Today I am going to present unusual flowers.
This is called Jack-in-the-Pulpit. The flower is that tube (spadix) sticking up in the upper middle of the image surrounded by the spathe.
Skunk Cabbage. This plant emerges through the snow in late winter. The first image shows a more...
Fluorite specimens are commonly zoned with purple on the outside and yellow on the inside. You can see the yellow color in the interior of this specimen.
This specimen is of yellow fluorite crystals with a cluster of Sphalerite (an important ore of zinc) attached.
This is a specimen of...
I have decided to post flowering trees today. Please pile on with any flowers you choose.
Desert Ironwood trees in Arizona bloom in May with beautiful lavender flowers. In fact, there is an Ironwood Forest National Monument in southeastern Arizona near Tucson that has many of these trees...
Eric will be gone for a few weeks so I will start this off. I will back home tomorrow so I will then be able to post threads on minerals and flowers again next week.
I’m going to do owls this week.
Barn Owl
Northern Saw-whet Owl.
Burrowing Owls
A rare specimen of Witherite on fluorite from Cave-in Rock, Illinois. This is a barium carbonite mineral that is poisonous to humans and is used in the manufacture of rat poison.
Citrine, a variety of quartz. The color comes from the presence of iron.
Native Coper from Michigan. The...
There is an issue with Uploading Photos (attachjments). I am not sure what the problem is, and I am looking into it. You can still try to Create your Threads and Upload your Photos, but it is hanging up during the Upload.
