A week ago Alan had mentioned he was getting 17 foot swells up on the Oregon Coast, well further down the coast here along Big Sur I was getting 12 to 17 foot swells too. So it was fun to watch as the waves and water would explode at times. I needed to get up the coast some more for sunset, but...
This is from last Sunday evening up at Pfeiffer Beach along Big Sur on the coast of California. I already did a tighter shot of it and a timelapse that I posted, this is now a wider shot at 24mm on a Full Frame showing the whole rock that the beam is going through. It's kind of amazing to me how...

From Sunday evening at Pfieffer Beach in Big Sur. It was a fun day of...
Well, don't count too close.
This was from a month or so ago at San Simeon on the California Coast, right below Big Sur country. The waves were coming in really nicely and hitting these rocks.
All comments are welcome,

I was up the coast in California yesterday and stopped by the Elephant Seal Refuge just north of San Simeon for a little while to shoot. It's amazing that for as much as the seals just lay there not moving for hours on end it seems, there actually is quite a bit of activity.
So here it looks...
Of the hundred or so Elephant Seals at Piedras Blancas in Big Sur California, only a few were really active towards sunset. This was one of them. This seal seemed to genuinely respond to my smiling at him. This was at 450mm with the Tamron 150-600mm G2 on a Nikon D850.
All comments are welcome...
Last weekend on my birthday run up to Pismo Beach for world famous Clam Chowder I ended up going up to test out the new Tamron 150-600mm G2 at the Elephant Seal gathering at Piedras Blancas just north of San Simeon which is at the bottom end of Big Sur in California.
The light was getting low...
Here are a couple of more shots from Morro Bay and Sea Otter that was having fun in the actual bay area. It was nice to be able to eat some fish and chips and clam chowder and then walk 50 feet to shoot the Sea Otter. :)
All comments are welcome,
Jim
PS. These were shot with my early...
This is from Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur from a few years back. I have posted a few others from this session, what I liked here was seeing how the beam played out on the beach itself. I did 3 versions of the same shot, I kept going back and forth whether I liked the mystery of no DR (Dynamic...
Today's Focus on this Friday is Beaches!
We're in the middle of July and it is definitely beach time, so please add your beach (not necessarily ocean) photos to this thread.
I'll start it off with a couple from the Big Sur area:
1) Garrapata Beach at Sunset
2) Coastline North of McWay Cove
Another from Big Sur up at Julia Pfeiffer Beach. This is a rock structure just to the south where the main key hole is. This one also has a super cool opening in it, but it's not as dramatic because there is no beam (that I have seen that actually ends up shining through the opening, probably...
Up at Julia Pfeiffer Beach that beam through the keyhole of the rock is really cool, but I also found it was interesting to shoot it from a bit further back and wider to get the whole rock in view. There wasn't a lot of clouds this evening, but then you don't really want much in the way of...
I have been posting some different Beam type shots in the City Forum, well here is probably a more familiar beam. I found a bunch of these shots in the archives that I had shot but never processed.
This is from Julia Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur California and it best shot in January...
This is from Montana De Oro up by Morro Bay in California. It's an area called Point Bouchon and unfortunately it's on P.G. &E. property so it's literally impossible to get sunset or sunrise shots there. It's only open like 8am to 4pm, and they have a guard station that you have to sign in and...
Sometimes sticking around after sunset is a nice thing... As the skies got darker the crowds thinned out and the colors got richer. So I kept shooting. This is McWay Cove in Big Sur about half an hour after the sun set. Any thoughts are welcome.
Usually when I hear Big Sur, I think wide open vista photos. In this one though I went a bit more intimate. Once I saw those starfish on the side of the rock I tried hard to find a composition where I could fit them in. In this version I went with a faster shutter speed to freeze the power of...
Lunar Eclipse over Big Sur - California
This was taken during a total lunar eclipse a few years ago. The darkened moon allowed the stars to shine through and the moon itself reminds me of the Star of Bethlehem on Christmas. So I'm sharing it today.
Pfeiffer beach in Big Sur has some really nice rocks just off shore, including a couple of arches. This one has become a popular photographic target every winter when the light of the setting sun shines through it.
For whatever reason, I had this spot to myself several years ago and spent a lot...
I shot this last fall, while the Soberanes fire was still burning just to the south. It was close enough that the actual park was closed, but I was happy with this spot along the road. The smoke along the horizon actually made it a little easier to blend my twilight shot of the cove with the...
There is an issue with Uploading Photos (attachjments). I am not sure what the problem is, and I am looking into it. You can still try to Create your Threads and Upload your Photos, but it is hanging up during the Upload.
