A New Years Shadow Settles In

This was a few years ago, on new years eve. Back before all the crowds and tourists. I ended up bushwhacking through one-foot deep and more fresh snow, couldn't really see it, and eventually lost the trail completely. Then eventually found the arch as the sun was setting, because no matter what, you're heading to the cliff, so it's just a matter of when. Bushwhacking through snow reminds me of hiking through sand, it takes twice the effort to get half as far. I actually remember this little mini-adventure fondly because it made me feel like Jeremiah Johnson for a few minutes as I had Canyonlands all to myself.

Feel free to add any of your New Years images. I used to make a point of going out on certain days like New Years just to get one picture...

Really nice Craig, a different view for sure and the snow and time of day make this completely different

I remember going in very early one morning for a moonlit shot and getting lost toward the end and I suspect I was just about where this was taken. Once I saw the arch I was able to find the trail down.

Thanks Ben. I think I stopped and took this because I was getting worried that the light was shifting so fast and by the time I would get there it would all be over. It could probably use some better processing as it's a little blue, but then again that's sort of what it's like that time of day.

Hey Craig,

I know I have gotten lost there before, back before the trail was better defined. I remember thinking how could I have lost the trail because it's pretty simple, but lose it I did...

I like your shot, and by the look of the light it's good you stopped and grabbed this shot because you just never know what it will look like even 5 mins later. All of that snow sure gives this a different feel.

Not sure I have any New Years Day shots. Of course, if I had a National Park located 10 mins from my house that might make it easier... :) Usually here we get hunkered down on New Years Eve and New Years Day because you don't want to get stuck in traffic heading out or back in. But I will look through the archives and see if I had been out shoot traveling over New Years at some time.

Nice story and shot. You tale suggests that going out on 1/1 is no longer such an exercise in isolation.

I have gone out on Christmas Day more than a couple of times but after checking my archives nothing that qualifies as a landscape for New Years Eve or Day.

Love the story and the photo Craig. I have no past items to post, but I'll get out tomorrow and New Year's Day (for something).

Thanks for the beautiful reminder.

I like the foreground being a little blue - it adds to the feeling of cold. I like seeing an icon like this as just another detail in a beautiful scene.

Its nice to see this location in a peaceful state, and you captured that quite well. I was there four days ago and it was a zoo, so much so that I couldnt find the motivation to go back up there in nice light and contend. It would be great if palces like this were hard to get to ;)
