Alien clouds in Black Canyon

Last Tuesday I went to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado. My goal was to see if it was worth visiting in the winter time as I had only shot it in the summer and fall. In the winter you can only drive to the Visitor Center because they don't plow the roads beyond that. It was close to Sunset so I got my cold weather gear on as it was about 16 degrees there and went out to the viewpoint area to shoot. The clouds ended up putting on a great show for me.

I did decide that I wanted to come back and snow shoe in to some of the other view points, when I did the next day on Wednesday, but for now, this is that Alien looking cloud settling in over the Black Canyon.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

That is a pretty nice set of clouds. Great sunset colors. At least from this vantage point there doesn't appear to be all that much snow but there must be a lot more if you donned snowshoes to hike farther.

Looks like getting all the winter garb on paid off big time! Lovely sky and colors, and I always love those looking off into infinity type landscape shots :)

Thanks Alan!

Yeah it’s hard to tell from a WA shot like this. They don’t clear the road of snow, so that’s why you need snow shoes because walking through 2+ feet deep of snow is not easy in regular snow boots. Since the snow just keeps piling up on it.

I guess you have been there! This must be the lower end of the canyon? Very nice image Jim.
Ha ha, thanks Bill!

This area is by the Visitor Center, so pretty much the end of it. I did snow shoe in (since the road is closed at the Visitor Center and the snow piles up on the road and it's either X-Country Skiing or Snow Shoeing to go beyond it) the day after this. I will get a few photos posted up from further into the canyon hopefully in a few days.

My favorite View Point is the Chasm View as it has those awesome striped canyon walls. In regards to your comments in that other thread, I had always thought that the Black Canyon was very boring and skipped going to it for year because all of the photos I had seen of it were really boring, and I mean really boring. So when I finally went there a year or two ago, I was so pleasantly surprised that it really is very photogenic. So I don't know why most of the photos on the internet are so bad, unless people were purposely making it look bad to keep people away?
