American Basin (Alpine Loop, southern Colorado)

Been busy with the new job the last few months so I've been scarce again, but just got back from a 2 week vacation to southwest Colorado (town of Creede for those of you who know the area). Will have more to share over the next few weeks as I process my images, but this one of the Columbine in American Basin is one of my early favorites.

I can see why this would be a favorite - very nice. Focus stack? The focus depth makes this image work very well for my eyes.

Oh Wow John!

First off, this is great! Really sweet shot.

Second, I have a few questions because I am planning on backpacking up to American Basin in 2 weeks.

How would you rate the wildflowers? The Columbine were blooming as seen in your photo, but would you say the wildflowers are peak? Or do you think there were more wildflowers yet to bloom?

Should I wait 2 weeks to head there? Or should I head up there in a week?

How was the hike up to American Basin? Did you camp up there? It will be my first time there, so any tips or suggestions would be great.

Did you make it up to any of the high altitude basins/lakes?

First off, I'm not a "wildflower guy" but I'd have to say that it's probably at its peak right now. This was taken on Tuesday, and the Columbine were in full bloom all over the basin. The Indian Paintbrush were mostly wide open, and those small yellow groundflowers were everywhere. Some of the blue-bells were open, but it seemed like we were just a little early for those. With the dry winter and spring they had in the Rockies it was surprising there were as many flowers as we saw.

I'd head up ASAP, certainly don't wait two weeks. The drive in from Lake City was easy, even a Hyundai Elantra made it to the turn-off..... darn glad it wasn't mine though.

We were staying at the family cabin over in Creede, so this was just a day jaunt in a Jeep. Did no hiking up there, just drove in and spent an hour or two there with the family. Took some pictures, lounged around, ate some cheese and crackers, headed home. Lots of marmots this year, more than I can remember and was even able to get pretty close to them (7-8'). Weather was beautiful as you can see from the photo, had no rain at all the last 2 weeks. Did not experience much smoke from the "416 fire" north of Durango either, though I've heard second-hand that it's flared back up a bit.

Oh wow! Thanks for the update. Maybe I will head out on the 5th?

So you can drive a Jeep up to American Basin? I am used to Ice Lake Basin or Blue Lakes where there is a 4+ mile hike to get up there.

Yup, this photo was maybe a 100 yard at most from the upper parking lot?
Wow, that's awesome. What's great about that is I can spend a couple of days up there at high altitude and it should help me to acclimate a bit before I go tackle the high altitude long backpacking into Ice Lake Basin.

That's a cool image John. Wildflowers and mountains are a favorite composition that I have not yet got to photograph. Looking at this makes me want to find such comps.
