Although this bird is often referred to as a hawk it actually belongs in the falcon family. This one was at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife refuge. This is one of my favorite birds.

You are not alone, Jim. I happen to be fortunate that I have a friend who is an outstanding birder and photographer and has basically taught me everything I know about birds and bird photography. We were photographing birds in Bosque del Apache and I called this bird a hawk and he immediately corrected me. I have never made that mistake again. Outside of birding I am sure it is not all that important.
