I have learned to arrive here early because the clouds we have in the late afternoon are often gone by sunset as they were this night. But the late pre sunset light is still pretty warm on the row of rocks.

Good call on the time of day. Nice light and the clouds really add. I do wish there was a little more breathing room on the sides.

Beautiful light indeed, and nice drama in the sky, at least for the time being.
I agree with Kyle about the spacing of the spires to the sides.

Hey Ben,

I agree, often those late afternoon shots are the best time to shoot there. Also, I really like the contrast of the white clouds with the blue of the sky. Very nice work here.

I do think that if you had moved to the left more, you would have merged the 2 rock outcrop closer together, and then you could have left more space on the edges.

I do like the light and the clouds but am a bit torn on the comp like the others above. If the clouds weren't shading the LaSalles so much they might have carried the comp a little better but since they are in the shadows the red rock formations tend to overwhelm a bit.

Thanks all for your replies. It looks like you all agree there should be more room on the edges. Those of you who know this site are aware thae you are fighting to eliminate the park road and parking area for balanced rock. I could have done this as a stitched pano however and might do that next time.

Hey Ben,

Perhaps if the clouds had been different so there was say a cool cloud that was only in the middle to give the center some visual focus, then this framing would work. But the distant mountains are not big enough to carry the center of the Photo.

So the idea of framing the shot like this is t bad to me, it’s only you are missing a center element to focus the eyes.

Ben, beautiful image. I'm liking the theatre approach here. I'm always reluctant to say too much about the perspective on any particular scene, as I know we all have to struggle at times to take advantage of light, clouds and formations, and often times scenes and conditions just don't comply with our wishes or expectations. That said, I never have a problem with suggestions. Good food for thought for the next attempt.

Anyhow, well done.
