I don't think these are uncommon birds elsewhere but they are very rare in the UK. Luckily there are a few breeding pairs within 10 miles of where I live.

What a great series. Love the eye color and overall markings and that patch of feathers at the eye this is one fancy grebe

Really intense eye color and I love the tuft of feathers just behind them. Neat birds.

I am not a birder, but I do pay attention to the birds I see when I am out, and I have never seen one of these in California. Those red eyes are so different.

Thanks Jim. You do have them in the US, under their alternative name of Eared Grebe, but only wintering in California. Winter plumage is a lot different. Basically they are light and dark grey
