The Blackwater River starts in and traverses Canaan Valley (the highest elevation large valley east of the Rockies). Much of the Valley is wetland and dominated by the Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge and two state parks. After about a 12 mile winding path across the valley, the Blackwater cuts a gap between two mountains and then plunges over 57-foot Blackwater Falls and 10 miles down rugged Blackwater Canyon, with world-class whitewater kayaking.
Here are some sunset images from a couple locations on the Blackwater River, one near its source at the merging of two beaver creeks, and one after it has crossed all of Canaan Valley and is cutting through the valley exit. In both of these is is quite placid, which is not indicative of the chaos that ensues just downstream!
Comments and suggestions welcome.
