Blood Moon in SoCal

Even though I got back late yesterday driving from Colorado, May wanted to go shoot the Super Moon Eclipse this morning at the beach. So I woke up at 4:30am and we headed down to Huntington Beach. I knew from using TPE that the moon would set over the Long Beach/Palos Verde Peninsula area, but it's the best we could do so we went with it.

This first one I processed is a tighter shot of the moon still in the earths shadow so it has that red blood color. It was shot with my new Nikon D850 which is working out so great for night shots and the Nikon 70-300mm lens.

Love the color and crispness of this. Not to change the subject, but my D850 is coming tomorrow...are you using the new 70-300 lens with that or the older g model? And what do you think of it with the D850? I have the g model and wonder if I should upgrade it. You can message me if you don't want to clog up the thread with your answer.

Hey Darcy, thanks so much!

As for the D7000 vs the D850... not sure how to adequately share the difference.... it would be like you are riding a kids tricycle for commuting and then you are able to upgrade to a Ferrari... the D850 will be so much better then the D7000. You shouldn't wait till Christmas. :)

Well hahahah, we are going to Hawaii in April for a week, then in July I am heading to Seattle (Port Townsend) with my mom to visit my Uncle so no funds.....maybe no funds at Christmas either LOL. Plus all my lenses are DX so not sure yet about switching this year.

Wow!! That moon is so sharp it looks like it jumps off of the screen. I wasn't thinking about upgrading from my D800 but I am now rethinking
that decision. BTW, nice image, Jim.

Hey Guy, you will love the D850! I have had mine a couple of weeks and man, I am sure loving everything about it. It's for sure a step up in quality from the D810.

My 70-300mm is a g version, it was about $600 if I recall correctly and I got it a few years ago. It's super sharp, really pretty light. I also have the 70-200mm and while it's f2.8 I appreciate the extra range of the 70-300 and how easy it is to lug around.
