Broken Below the Stars (Joshua Tree)

Nicely done and BTW Welcome to FocalWorld Aaron. I had pretty good luck with my old Canon 6D up to around ISO3200 but never ventured up to 6400 other than for testing. This looks like it did a good job with the high ISO and the noise levels.

Pretty good for an older Canon, at iso 6400
I use to not like to push it above 1600 but with my lens only being an f/4 i wasn’t getting all the light I hoped for. It does surprisingly well at 6400 but does take a little extra time to clean up in post processing.

Thank you Alan! I was the same way for a while but about a year ago I started pushing up the iso for my astro stuff and have been pretty pleased with the results. I don’t think I’d push it above 6400 though 😅

Welcome to FocalWorld Aaron!

It was so awesome to meet you out at Joshua Tree this last week.

What a great job you did here! I remember years back when the 16-35mm was my main lens and it was f4. I used it for shooting at night, but I don't recall getting anything as nice as this. Part of this was back then even going to ISO 3200 could be iffy... :) So that's awesome to see what you are able to do at ISO 6400.

I like your composition too. When I was leaving on Friday I was mainly using my IR camera, and my theme was "Life and Death". I was shooting compositions similiar to yours where they included a live and dead, or a dead part of a Joshua Tree. It was a lot of. So to see you working this Life and Death type scene like I did I found kind of cool!

Very nice work here, and a great way to introduce yourself to everyone.

It was really nice meeting you out there too! Thanks again for letting me be a part of the forum.

I usually shoot anywhere between 1600 and 6400 when I’m shooting at night with the f4. The 6D mark II does surprisingly well in low light, though it does take a little bit of extra work in post.

It’s funny that we both had similar ideas while leaving the park. I’ve always really loved finding trees on the ground to help lead into the frame and finding this tree size branch that had broken off, I thought it made for a compelling story. I’d love to see the shots you got with the IR with similar comps!

Welcome to Focal World!
Nice composition & restraint with both the light painting & PP.
Thanks so much Monika! I’ve definitely over done it in the past with light painting so I was trying to keep it minimal. In fact the shot I took before this one I had over done it a little bit with light coming from both the right and the left.
