Calypso bulbosa

A rather inelegant name for this petite bloom. I went back to where I had seen them last year. Somehow not nearly exciting as when I first found them, though they are always a delight.

This shows one grouping. There was another, a bit more scattered just maybe 2' away, then pairs scattered in the forest a bit further down the road. The mosquitos got to nibble at me (or so I thought until I examined my back that evening and found it covered in welts) as I was shooting. The pine needles give you an idea of scale.

And this one, emerging from the shadows of the forest looked kind of like the mother ship coming for her lilliputian passengers. I would have liked to be able to shoot straight up into the flower, but I would have had to dig a ditch.

Beautiful little flowers. I love the isolated macro shot in the last image - neat details.

You would have been really good with archaeological survey work - walking grids on compass bearings looking for small things on the ground like worked flint flakes. Spotting these little suckers on your strolls is in the same class :)

I have always sucked at finding scraping tools, arrowheads, pottery shards, etc.
at least flowers are bright & in contrasting colors to their surroundings. Mostly. Or the ones I can see, anyway.

Calypso sounds elegant, Bulbosa, not so much. It actually sounds like the name of a character from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie with Johnny Depp.

Very nice capture Monika, and it is a really cool looking flower.

Great shots of a very attractive orchid Monika. Had to look it up as I'd not heard of it before.
Thanks, guys. Common names are calypso & fairy slipper orchids.
