Conway Summit Golden Hour

This photo comes from the Conway Summit vista point on U.S. Highway 395 overlooking Mono Lake in the Eastern Sierra. On my way back to Bishop from a Thanksgiving week with my parents in Sacramento, I had to stop when I saw this scene.

These are the Inyo-Mono Craters, a relatively young chain of volcanic lava domes south of Mono Lake. I loved how the evening light was hitting the slopes and how calm the water was, forming this great reflection. Panum Crater is in the shot and I imagine the shiny, black obsidian of that crater looks beautiful combined with snow. Some tufa towers of Mono Lake are also visible in the shot.

Michael, this is a lovely shot. I love the reflection of snow clad mountains.

Many years ago when I went to Mono Lake, I noticed some of the hills had almost pure black slopes, I thought it was kind of quarry or man made hills, now I know why.

There are lots of volcanic features in and around Mono Lake. Next time you go to Mono Lake, check out Black Point. It's a series of volcanic slot canyons near the shoreline. Paoha Island was formed by volcanic eruptions within the lake as recently as the 17th century.
