Dogwoods with Cathedral Rocks

From last month in Yosemite, this is a wider view of some Dogwoods west of Gates of the Valley looking across the Merced with the Cathedral Rocks that surround Bridalveil Falls. You can see how they end up being the light/color source of the reflection in the Merced.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

Its interesting to see the larger scene for the other dogwood shot but at the same time this one feels a bit busy as a comp. I like the more isolated blooms.

The sunlit rock walls and the dogwood blooms are competing for my attention and my eyes are left in the shadows in between since the cliffs are too high in the scene to be the subject and the blooms are too low. There isn't quite enough in the river reflections and the meadow behind to carry the scene.

Thanks so much Alan. :)

I am probably too biased on this to be objective. I like it for the overall view of the area, it's not meant to have any one object or area carry the scene, it's simply a view to sit back and just enjoy the journey of all that is happening in this. At least, hopefully sit back and enjoy. :) I know there is a lot going on in this, it wasn't meant to compete with my other Dogwood photos, but to compliment them. But again... I am probably too emotionally invested in this one to rationally view it.

So I do appreciate your and Ben's thoughts on it and that it doesn't quite work for you guys. :)

Hey Jim, I am like you, I enjoy the big picture which is why I seldom do intimates. This image works fine for me, just not as compelling as the first one. I don't mind busyness or lack of specific subject, but that first image just had more impact.

Jim, looks like we walk the same piece of river! I like the time of day here for some great color on the river.

Thanks Dan! Yeah, I am sure we did walk the same area. One thing with the Valley and the Dogwoods, they basically can be mapped out since they are in specific locations. Maybe next year we can connect in the Valley and meet up and shoot a bit.
