What do people think about this site's ability for members' to download other members' work, or for that matter sharing, by any means?
Do people even care?

Hey Zeph, most of our photos posted on line should be pretty low res work. But you bring up a good question. There really is no reason to download someone else's photo. I will look at turning that feature off later this evening.

Thanks,

Jim

OK, but i'm still interested how people feel about their work being used by others...

I don't love having people download my work. That's one reason why I tend to post no larger than 850 pixels in the long direction and include a watermark that shows my website. At that size, there isn't much they can do with it.

For a presentation forum, downloading others work without prior notification is not good. In a critique forum it is often desirable for others to work your images to show how certain improvements will work. In fact is is customary to post a straight out of camera image for others to play with. The poster should make this intent clear.

The only reason I am saying this in this particular post is that I hope we will be able to download others work at the critique forum.

I also agree, anyone can download my small images because they are not worth much at that size.

Unless I missed something, the only place where photos could have been downloaded was the Media Gallerys, and I have turned that off now. Is that what you were referring too, or did miss what you were saying?

With the Media Gallery it was an oversight on my part because I would not want anyone to download someone elses photo. As mentioned by Kyle, there isn't much someone could do with someones downloaded photo when they are web sized, and plus, there is truly no way to stop it. Whether it's right clicking an image and selecting download, or its using a screen capture to capture an image. It's really difficult to prevent, but definitely I don't want a Download Button available in the Media Gallery, and that's now gone.

To Ben's point, definitely some kind of download capability for the Critique forum would be interesting. Currently there is no way to download in any of the forums. Ben's point is an interesting one that I will have to explore more later.

At this point in my photography journey, I suppose I'd initially be flattered. I guess it's something I don't feel I need to worry about because I don't have any mind blowing images worth downloading and being claimed by someone else. It's the reason I don't really use watermarks.

The largest I post online is 1200px on the long edge. That's probably too generous though.

All I was concerned about was the download button in the gallery section, thanks Jim. I realize once something is online, ownership rights diminish.
