Dry falls with salt extrusions at the head of a red rock canyon. Gold Butte National Monument, Feb., 2023.
I saw no footprints in this area - I bet very view people have enjoyed this view. In the areas that are more heavily traveled the salt pretty much stays intact as it is embedded into the sand. There have been some pretty serious flows that have come down this wash from the looks of it. Including where you shot this from. I like how clean the salt/calcium deposits are along the walls - as opposed to being worn off by footprints.
Thanks, Sunny. The hard part of photographing this scene was trying to set things up to show a flow down and around to the right. It took quite a while - I'm glad I had this one figured out (to some extent) before the sunlight was off the canyon wall.Kurt,
I can just see the chocolate brown water coming down ...hitting the wall...going right...like this image a lot.
Thanks for the input, Jim. I do have a couple that don't have the sun so I will look forward to working on those and we'll see how things look. This is really cool Kurt! Love the look of this. I would suggest doing a pano crop and losing the sunlit walls. With them in the image my eye struggles to see the dryless falls. When I scroll up to cut them out of the image, it allows my eye to really enjoy the curves of the fall area.
Keep these images coming! It's really wetting my appetite for my next trip up that way. I am going to allocate time to jump off the I-15 and explore there instead of zipping by.
Thanks, Pepper. It was amazing to be there.....the salt extrusions are an interesting addition to the red rock. good place, great textures & color in the rock.
Jameel: I agree. It almost looked like snow in some places. The salt extrusions are a nice contrast to the red rocks.
Thanks again, Douglas!Excellent image, Kurt.
