Eclipse Expanded

I had shared several shots of the eclipse in August just after it happened, but since then I've processed another version in B&W. It is a wider view so you can see Mercury in the lower left corner and it includes data from a longer exposure, allowing me to show more corona and more detail in the moon.

Any thoughts are welcome.

Wow, this is really great. I wish now I had invested in a real filter, but since I was only seeing 97% I did not think it worthwhile. But this is fantastic.

Simply gorgeous!!

I'd like to see the blacks boosted a bit and while it's cool that you captured Mercury too I feel that it detracts from the overall awesomeness of the eclipse. If you're going for symmetry you might consider cropping a little off the left.

Hey Kyle,

Thanks for giving me another excuse to kick myself in the rear for not going to shoot this past eclipse. :(

This looks so great in B&W. I like he flaring off from behind the moon, and also the bits of detail on the moon itself.

Very cool, Kyle! Big honking lens? Blended exposures?
My impression was of a much blacker disc than you have in your image.
I had decided not to shoot it & just experience it, which I was very happy to do (it was pretty amazing and my backpack was already heavier than I was happy with) but now I'm planning on Patagonia in 2020 to try to shoot it......

Thanks Ben - from what I've gleaned there really is a huge difference between 97% and 100%. I don't think you can really pick up the corona at 97%.

Wow! This is stunning.
Thanks a lot Darcy!

Thanks Jeff - I agree about Mercury and the symmetry. In other shots I've posted (there are some in my gallery) I've gone with a vertical crop to really emphasized the eclipse. I was just going for a little something different here.

Thanks Jim. The B&W help me with some of the blending to get more detail in the moon. The WB was different on the moon face and the red flares were bleeding into it. All disappears in B&W...

I took a 15 shot bracket, including a 2 second exposure which actually had quite a bit of detail in the face of the moon. I shot this with a 5DSR, a 100-400 lens and a 2X extender. I was pretty happy with the effective 800mm focal length.
