El Capitan, Yosemite NP

Thanks Alan. I thought B&W would work better than color due mainly to the cloud formation highlighting the top of El Cap.

Hey John,

This is very nice. I sure like those clouds, you were smart to work with those clouds. The ways they radiate off the peak of El Cap is great positioning, and I also like that the upper face of El Cap being lit up because that glow transfers to the clouds radiating.

Great work here.

Thanks Jim. I just entered it in the OC Fair this year. Let's see if it makes it past the first round. [Insert laughing emoji here :)]

Very nice. I'd kind of like a bit more of the water to balance out the sky, but don't know what you had to work with at this location.

Thanks Jim. I agree, more water would have been nice. And not to say it couldn't be better, but the runoff last spring was very large including some occasional flooding. There was minimal beach to shoot from and in the case of this shot I did want to give preference to the pattern in the clouds.

I was going to ask if you were going to enter any photos in the OC Fair. I have been entering for quite a few years now, and I was going to take this year off to take a break, but now.... I might just have to get off my butt and enter some photos too, I don't want to get left behind. :)

Plus... you can ask Tex and Tuan, we have a ritual of whoever get's the highest award from the OC Fair has to buy the others a Strawberry sundae. So we usually will pick one day of the Fair for us all to meet up there together.

I can add, that due to the flooding from last year and the year before the banks along the river have been severely eroded. Places we used to be able to stand down next to the river are gone. So it's really changed how we can compose some of those shots there. There was some nice river banks to shoot Horsetail Falls from in February that are now gone as well.

Jim, you better hurry. Today is the deadline.

BTW, The B&W from Cathedral Beach that Frans critiqued won an honorable mention at last year's fair. The year before, they rejected it.

I get rather annoyed by the the fair competition, but still enter stuff. This year I actually entered 6 which was a mistake but I did it anyway. :)

Hey, that's great that you got an Honorable Mention! I have gotten some 2nd place, 3rd place and Honorable mentions over the last few years. But Tex holds the honor as I think it was 3 or 4 years ago, he got like Best of Show I think? His photo was totally covered in Ribbons!

I will probably enter 5 or 6 too, I usually enter that many and hope that 3 or 4 might get accepted, you just never know.

And yeah, the judging can be a bit crazy. I like to go through it and make my own choices and compare it with the judges. Usually I will think they have missed the boat on many of their choices, but it's all for fun, so I don't take it too seriously.

I have gotten to where I tend to limit myself to 3 or 4 max and maybe even less. I'm happy if even one gets accepted. I've only had two ever accepted but both did win an honorable mention. So I now tell my friends I'm a "multi award winning photographer", but I can never say it with a straight face. :D

Sounds like an easy sundae for me if you let me in. :D

I like the gritty sharpness in the foliage and rock, great vantage point as it really makes you feel small !

Ha ha, it's fun being a Multi Award winner!

Okay John, you guys all talked me into not taking a break this year. So I entered in 7 photos into the OC Fair. It was really hard to narrow it down to 7. Hopefully 3 or 4 make it through the process. :)

Jim, you're being greedy. Overall, the fair only accepts 20% of all entries. ;)
