Faces of War, Tarawa

Here are the latest negatives I processed. I think I will stop at three

Faces if War.
This is quite possible that the guy in the middle has just passed. The one to the left with his and over his face might have lost a friend. The soldier to the right was probably a medic or performing medic duties (All combat soldiers have some triage training).

The crush of battle
We can see at least a half dozen soldiers hunkered down & crawling, trying to advance this hill. There are probably enemy forces/snipers, waiting to pick off anyone who pops up. Notice that all of the trees that are ragged stumps. This is most likely from repeated air-strikes or artillery to "prep" battlefield.
I imagine the photographer might have been kneeling to take this shot. This would have been risky.

These negatives were pretty scratched & dirty. Took about an hour to clean up both. These are almost 75 years old.

Sobering shots. That collection of negatives is a pandora's box of someone's memories from a harsh period in time.

Alan, yes it is. I think this is it for me. These are $12- $16 a piece & I am content with the three as they tell their parts of the story.

Wow, I agree with Alan these are quite sobering. Nice work cleaning them up, did you get a before and after cleanup shot?

Very very good. And can you imagine the photographer? We think we have it hard sometimes waiting for good light.
Ben, I think they had techniques to ensure they got "something".
Probaby "Sunny 16" & zone focus stuff. I suspect open apertures for hand held shutter speed too.
The DOF in the 1st shot is pretty narrow, but sufficient.
