in Petrified Forest NP.
These are all from Blue Mesa.
The light wasn't great as the mid-morning sky was fairly bright and hazy.
If you look closely, in the 2nd and 3rd images, a few hikers can be seen that give some idea of the scale of the area.

1) looking northeasterly from the northern rim overlook.
"Burning Bush in the Wilderness"?

2) Looking northwesterly from a nearby vantage point. More colors in this incredible view.

3) Overlooking the Blue Mesa Trail, in a depression on top of the mesa.
Can you see why it's called Blue Mesa?

Like Jim mentioned, next time I'm in this area I will shoot for dawn, or even pre-dawn light, or evening dusky light.

Thanks, Ben. Yes I made the entire drive and have a few shots from Painted Desert. The light was worse as the sun was higher and brighter, but I'll show a few shortly. Stand by. :)
It was a fascinating area, the light notwithstanding. Will just have to plan better next time!

Fun set - my favorite is the first one with the stronger shadows. It shows the striations and variation in the colors well.

Now you are making me want to make a return trip to this place.

Nice set, Barry. A very interesting looking geological area (to which I've never been!). That blue colour is astonishing and is presumably from some mineral in the area's rocks.
