Hagia Sofia mosaics Istanbul

I am not easily impressed by buildings but standing in a church that is almost 1500 years old moved me. for almost a thousand years this was the largest place of worship in the world, firstly a church then a mosque and now a museum but it still exudes spiritaulity and is a testament to the skill of the builders as it has withstood fires, sackings by the crusaders and earthquakes. In Scotland we were probably still living in wooden shacks. Large sections of the original mosaic remain with this small section showing Jesus and John the Baptist with my wife completing the scene.

This is awesome Ken! What a cool location, I can see why you were moved. Adding your wife into the composition is perfect and to me really elevated the power of this photo.

powerful image ken, even without your description enhancing the image's story. i love how they both seem to be looking right at her.

Very nice - that is a building I would definitely like to visit someday. Byzantine churches from that era almost always feature some mosaic work but these are more detailed than the ones I have visited in Jordan.
