Heceta Head - A Different View

For a while now I have been trying to get a sunset shot of the Heceta Head Lighthouse from the beach but this is more difficult than it sounds. A couple of years ago I timed my effort for an extra low tide at sunset so I could get far enough out to have a view of the lighthouse. I had more than a couple of sneaker waves lapping around my legs while shooting this. My dream shot of sunset colors with a shaft of light on the lighthouse didn't come to pass but I always held out hope for a repeat effort. Last winter's storms completely wiped out the beach sand where this shot was taken from so this might be as close as I will ever get.

Very nice. I can't recall how many times I have been there and to this approximate spot. One time they were burying a whale in the sand.

The chances of good sunsets here are poor in my experience.

Anyway, I like this.

The problem right now is that the sand I was standing on for this lighthouse angle is now gone. Last year's winter storms extensively rearranged the south end of the little cove below the lighthouse and tore out a lot of the beach sand so you would now be about waist deep for this shot.

One of my favorite campgrounds is nearby so I go down there often.

Hey Alan,

So if the sand is gone, is it just a rock floor then? Hopefully the next winter storm will bring the sand back in. I have shot from there a few times, and I can't image how it would be without sand.

This is a nice shot, and it looks like you were soooo close to getting some color in the clouds too.

Actually the river changed it's course and now goes right over where that sand used to be. This is what it looked like in late May:

The old spot to shoot from is about 50' to the left of this image frame. This is at the lowest tide for the month.

The first image is as close as I got to getting some color and sun rays.
