Hummer at last

My wife sets up a hummingbird feeder sometimes. The buggers would constantly come for food unless I set up a camera and then would be nowhere to be found. I was not out there enough to get them used to me. I also don't have good lenses for birds right now. For this shot, I used an old manual focus lens (Leica R 280/4 apo with, I think, a 1.4x extender tho not sure about that now). It is a fairly heavy crop. I know it is not great for the standards of real birders, but was fun for me as it was a personal achievement to finally get a pic of one of these fast movers!

Congratulations!
Nice image.

I tried a number of tricks to outfox the hummers. They are the most wily and observant birds. As soon as a lens gets pointed at them, they're gone. It's like the big end scares them for some reason... Just because it looks like a bazooka!

I would open the door, have my camera on a tripod in a different room, with a big lens, and then hope some would come by.

Hey Stephen,

This is pretty good, and I sure would be happy to have this shot. Just recently I saw one, but before I could raise the camera to my eye it was gone!

Excellent portrait! We have 3 feeders around our house with constant activity but they are waaaay too skittish for me to get a shot like this.
