IC2177 Seagull Nebula

So I was trying to match (or get close to) Mike Lewis's excellent rendition of IC2177 but I feel fell I short especially considering I had 11 hours in this image, the problem was it was taken during a full moon, and I can't help but think the moon washed out a lot of detail?

What to you all think? Should we even bother to shoot during a full moon? I used the L-Extreme filter with a OSC camera

Firstly, thanks for the shout out on my image, much appreciated. This is a very excellent version, with lots of detail to share and a nice palette.

I would attribute the differences to both the Moon (my data was taken starting on the 25th of Jan and ending on the 30th, so like 16% Moon to about 66% Moon) and then the usage of a mono camera with 3nm narrowband filters. OSC narrowband imaging has come a long way (it wasn't even a thing like 5 years ago) but I still feel like to get that last little bit of detail and better channel separation mono imaging with narrow bandpass filters is the way to go. So perhaps that accounts for the differences? I am imaging remotely with my gear down south of Tucson, so skies there are better than here in CO, but not as dark as say where @JimFox goes in Joshua Tree. That could also be part of the equation. This object emitted in all 3 common NB wavelengths so that gave me 3 channels to mix - guessing you maybe had 2?


In any case, this is a great result, and thanks for mentioning my effort as well 👍😃

I forgot about the camera difference, and south of Tucson helps too. Are you anywhere close to Mt. Graham ?

This is really great Ed! I think you did super well here. Being able to capture during a full moon is still all new to me, so I am working through what works best, what doesn't. I had shot primarily with the L-Pro, because I like the wider balance of it, but I am thinking looking it this one of yours, that I should have used my L-Enhance which is closer to a NB filter for me. It's not as ND of a filter as the L-Extreme you used, but hopefully it will get me in the ballpark.

While this might miss some of the nuances from Mike's Seagull, I think this is still very strong, you got lot's of great detail, and some really strong coloring. I like the strong Oiii mix you have in this.

I was going to wait until next week to get back out with mine, but seeing this Seagull of yours, I am now going to look for a clear sky with no wind night this week that I can run back out to Joshua Tree and image then just with the L-Enhance.
