Ice Lake Basin in Color

Jim,

Not too often you'll find me pulling for the color version, but here I find it to be the stronger image. The sky looks better in the mono rendition, but the nuances of the hillside are lost in the busyness.

Now this color version is really awesome! Starting with the purple flowering popping like crazy against the greenery, then with the slant forcing your eyes around the multitude of wonderful little dots of color towards the center of the image. Wonderful contrasting brown footpaths twist and meet drawing your eye up along the stream to the lake, then wrapping around the mountain range.

Might could squeeze a bit more out of that sky, but the comp and processing on the rest is really, really nice to these amateur eyes.

I am another fan of the color version - there are patches of color that got lost in the B&W in the foreground and they really add to the comp. Green vs. grey on the mountain peaks also get a better contrast boost and the grays vs. the orange/tan on the peaks wasn't really visible in B&W.

I really like this, Jim. Lovely natural colors all through the image, and a delightful, inviting comp. Dig the trails leading up to the glacial lake and rust colored peaks.

Not sure which I like more, both are great. Looks like my kind of place!

I might try darkening the clouds just a tad in the top center, that bright area draws my eye a bit away from the peaks.

I also agree that the color image works best for this scene. It's the color that highlights and separates the many different features of this image..particularly in the hillside. Those features blend into one another in the b&w. Really nice.

Thanks you guys. I am glad you liked this, and yeah, I will look at darkening the clouds, it was an incoming storm so giving it a little bit more of a storm feel sounds like a good idea.
