Icelandic Fail!

On my last trip to Iceland, one guy, K had a really bad trip. He was flying from the midwest to the east coast, then to Iceland. His Iceland flight got canceled, so instead of getting in around noon, he arrived around midnight. And, of course, his checked bag(s) didn't make it. There was another man from Berlin who had arrive 2-3 days earlier & his bags didn't make it either. Fortunately, both mens bags arrived the next day & we took off, just 1/2 day behind schedule. Things went along OK until about 1/2 way through the trip. We'd gone to a thermal area and just a few minutes after getting there, our leader, Daniel, noticed a nail in a tire of the van. The closest garage was going to close soon, so we needed to leave within 20' to make it there in time. We went back to the thermal area the next day & were able to shoot. As I approached the van, I saw K there with something green in his hand. In my semi-delirious state, I associated it with the color of my dogs poop bags & I wondered why he had poop bags. As I got closer, I saw that it was a cloth & he was wiping his camera with it. Turns out he had his camera mounted on his tripod, then turned away for his pack. He didn't say it, but I said something like, "You probably just took a few steps away" & he didn't disagree. Or agree. But, yes, as I'm sure you have leaped to the conclusion of this sad tale: one of those strong Icelandic gusts came along & blew his gear into a fumerole. He hadn't backed up his memory cards, either. This is an iPhone shot of his cleaned up gear.

And here's one of the hot pots, if you're curious (not the culprit, as far as I know)

Ouch - that's sad. Any chance in the world he had some backup gear for the rest of the trip?
He was able to borrow the same body & lenses from the trip leader. He didn't have insurance through homeowners or belong to the Canon Professional Services because, "I'm always really careful with my gear".

And he didn't carry a back-up body for the same reason.

Hey Monika, wow... how horrible for that person. And yeah, I can't imagine going on a trip like that to Iceland and not having a backup camera.

A sorry tale and could be a bit of a wake-up for me, as I'm out on the ice in Norway next month ....... must be careful!......must take back up!.......

I used to never bring a backup - I didn't want the weight or expense. Last year I started bringing my Canon M6 as my walk around camera when I go on photo trips and with the lens adapter I can use all of my normal lenses if something happened. I'd lose some field of view from my wide lenses and my resolution would drop to 20MP, but at least I woudn't be dead in the water.

"only 20 MP" -- not so bad!
I always bring a backup on overseas or "big" trips. And I muse about how I never bring one for regular domestic trips, even if it's a 3 hour hike in after a 1-2 hour drive. Or 1-2 day drive, for that matter.

On another trip, a woman didn't watch her backpack w/lenses & tripod at the base of Aldeyjarfoss & dumped those in. She finished the trip with the body & lens that was attached to it.

About 10 years ago I decided I needed to be carrying some kind of camera body backup and bought a Canon 50D in case something happened to my then fairly new Canon 5D on a trip. I kept it as a spare after upgrading to a 5D Mkii but it's now shelf ware with a 6D and the 5D Mkii as bodies in the bag that can share batteries.
