Icelands Black Sand Beach

I took my first trip out of the country and I choose Iceland. Sunset on Black Sand Beach. The combination of the black sand on the beach and watching the wave crashing on the beach was calming. I could have sat here all day watching the waves.

Hey Alisa,

What a wonderful shot, I like it quite a bit! I hope that one day I can go and just sit at that beach all day. :)

2 suggestions for you on this to perhaps consider.

1. The white water is not white. You know I shoot tons of shots at the beach, a very common occurrence is that the water that was white to our eyes when shooting turns blue when we process it. To turn the white to pure white will cause it to look odd, but usually I will use selective color and adjust either the cyan or white in the water and pull back a bit on the cyan. If you pull too much the white water will actually gain a magenta cast.

2. I would think about a crop. You have some super cool coloring in the background sky with the majority on the left half of the shot, with just a small spot on the right. I would consider cropping this 2 possible ways, either stay with the 2:3rds format you know have and just crop from the right to lose the color on the right and a little off the top and bottom. Or go to an older traditional crop of a 4:5 and crop even more off the right so that the color on the left fills almost the whole background. Either way, I would crop a bit off the bottom as you will see you have a line of white water from the wave that is almost being clipped at the bottom, since there is no breathing space below that thin strip of white, myself I would just crop that off so that you then do have that breathing space between the next edge of water and the bottom.

I agree with Jim. This is a wonderful image Alisa. I am hoping you will give his suggestions a try and repost. I would love to see it with the minor adjustments. Getting great advice like this is a true benefit of joining this forum.
