In The Flow

Here's a shot of some grass backlit by the setting sun in a field near our house (taken last month). I was using the Canon 70-300mm and this was at about 200mm. I really love this lens for close-ups because of the incredibly soft background blur. Out of all the shots I got, this one is my favorite because there is a second grass stem behind the first which is out of focus and has the funny effect of looking like a shadow cast by the foreground stem, as if it was close to a canvas backdrop. Not sure if that's what others see too. I finally got around to a crop that I really like for this. I like how some of the seedheads are lining up with the sun's orange glow and look like they're interacting with it. The word flow came to mind, hence the title.

Very nice Amy - the OOF grass in the background almost makes a shadow image to the in focus subject plant. Nice soft background tones.

I didn’t see it at first, but the OOF grass stem in the background does feel like a shadow! How cool!

I think the rear seedhead alignment and the background work really well with the subject to combine into a very appealing image. Good execution.
