Infrared with Vaseline

And at night! :) So back when we had our Community Challenge last year of using Vaseline for creative purposes in our photography, I decided to do it with not just Vaseline, but also in Infrared, but then also at night. Crazy I know.... :)

Weekend Challenge - 2021/05/15-16 - Vaseline Gaussian Blur | Focal World

So this is 590nm IR with Vaseline spread on the UV filter and then since I thought the vaseline might make for some cool streaks, at night. It is Channel Swapped.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

That was a cool idea. Hadn't done any vaseline shots in years and hadn't thought of mixing with IR.

I appreciate that Doug!

Last year we did a series of weekend events where I would challenge everyone to go out and photograph with some old school methods we used to use back in the days of film. It was really a lot of fun I thought, so the Vaseline challenge was one of them.

Interesting effect. Crazy idea - sure. We spend to buy expensive lenses which are sharp, has good contrast and so forth. And then we put vaseline in front of it :)

Ha ha… so true. It’s funny that back in the day, none of use were inspecting sharpness like we do today. As long as the lens produced what was sharp, that was all we cared about. And I remember as a teenager and into my 20’s, never even thinking about that. A lens was a lens at least to me back then.

Not entirely true for all of us - as a student in Archaeology good sharp images were considered a cornerstone of recording our work both in the field as well as lab settings. I spent more than a bit of time refining my techniques after checking my results under a binocular microscope for sharpness. I still am somewhat obsessed with good sharp focus in my images and for the life of me can't understand why I am supposed to like what happens when you strap a Lens Baby on your $2000 lens to make it look like you shot through a pop bottle.
