Kings Canyon - Evening #2

Anytime I am at a new place, I am mentally taking notes of places to return for potential sunset/sunrise that look fruitful compositionally speaking. I had stopped at this spot earlier in the day with my wife but due to wearing ourselves out, she elected to stay at the campground. The spot worked ok, but not as well as I had hoped. The clouds in the far distance hid the mountains preventing the composition I wanted (a compression effect with my 100-300 highlighting the valley trees with the distant peaks...the peaks being hid by cloud cover). However, the light more than made up for it. In fact, the sky put on what heck of a show!

As I was waiting for the light to change and trying out differing perspectives and comps, I began to move down the hill a bit and then looked up and saw a fantastic rainbow spanning Kings Canyon in the fading light. When the rainbow finally passed, the clouds really created even more intense color and drama illuminating the sky and canyon walls in a deep purple hue. Here are 2, neither are completely finished and I will revisit these and others but I figured I would share with you all.

That rainbow is really nice, but the light and composition of the second is my favorite.
Thank you Ben. I am going to revisit the folder with these images and do some studying of the different comps and see what works best. Sometimes I need to step away for awhile and my opinions change. I like the rainbow as well, but did not feel I got the composition I wanted. I prefer the colors though in the 2nd :)

Hey Jon,

These are great! What an awesome evening you had.

Now for me, it's #1 all the way. Maybe I am just into Rainbows today, but I am really liking that one.
