Life Guard Station on Film

As part of the National Camera Day, I shot a roll of film through a brand new used 1953 Agfa Stileto that I had just gotten but hadn't used yet. This was taken down in Seal Beach California. One of the fun (sarcasm)aspects of using the Agfa was that it didn't have a film counter, so I had to try in vain to keep count of where I was on the 36 exposures.

I remember how well film handles highlights. Instead blowing out like in digital, the highlights seem just graduate across the blown area.

This was Kodak Colorplus 200. The camera store was out of Ektar 100, so I was stuck with 200 and that's where the 1/200th of a sec fastest shutter speed made it a bit of a pain. Handholding the polarizer in front of the lens helped, but the frame of the polarizer cut across the View Finder which on the old film cameras was a separate optic, so composing was a bit crazy with the ring cutting across my field of vision.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

Nice result for your efforts - sounds like an interesting but "character building" experience.
Ha ha, trust me. I felt like a juggler. Between the manual focus and having to guess the distance, and using my A6400 as a basic exposure meter, to the composing... it was crazy, and I was honestly glad when that roll of film finished, I breathed a huge sigh of relief.

But then I found myself anticipating the results while the film was being developed, and when I picked it up and looked them I actually felt some elation over the results. It was kind of weird. I didn’t think I would feel that way.

So I think I mentioned this, I am actually going to buy 1 roll of film, probably B&W and shoot it over the length of the trip. I think, just to be doing something a little different. I will get ISO 50, so I shouldn’t have exposure problems.

I might be closer to film use than most on this site ( gave it up in 2013) and I know how hard it would be to get this image. Great job, Jim.

Thanks so much Doug. Yeah I think most of us switched over long ago. I think it’s been 14 or 15 years ago I switched.

Nicely done. Juggling is a good description with a rangefinder!
OK, Jim. I expect to see some B&W. Hey, you might try the sunny-16 rule!
