Mesa Arch

I've photographed Mesa Arch more times then I can remember. Not sure you can make a 'bad' image of the arch. Even though you don't see much of the arch you used it well to frame mid-ground. Also, you did a good job to control the flare of the sun. Not over done. I say good job!

I like what you did here. I generally try for a full arch which considering the people requires being in the middle with an 11 mm lens. But there is nothing wrong with this view either.

I don't expect much detail past the washer women, and you handled the flare very well. I might take just a tad of red out of it.

You could go for a 16x9 aspect ratio, off the bottom, but this is also fine with me.

I like your take on this one Zeph! I grabbed a piece of paper and held it up to the screen to see how various crops would work. I like how it is, but i think if you cropped out half the foreground (kind of like a pano), it would work well also. I kind of like the "vignetting" feel to the foreground though....

Colors are good. After seeing so many MA images, I may need time to adjust to the offset version here. Things get imprinted and expectations are the result. It is a bit foreground rocks heavy. I still think including the right side that's out of view here would make a better image.

Hey Zeph, the glow looks great. I would go with a pano crop and cut off from the bottom. Also the yellow ring around the sun seems too pushed. My eyes get drawn from glow of the arch because the ring around the sun isn’t coming across natural.

I'm good with the scene as it is, but I also like Jim's idea of the crop as an alternate. You did very well here; it's such a great arch for light, and I 'm as good with the segments as the whole.

Hi Zeph,

What a Beautiful Image, I've never been there so I love seeing it through your Eyes.

It has to be a stunning and over powering sight in person !!! Very Nicely Done.

Take Care,

I agree with the idea of a pano crop and taking a little off the bottom. I have a similar shot from my visit earlier this year and that's about how I ended up presenting it. More and more I have been cropping a lot of my landscapes at a 2:1 aspect ratio. I really like how that ratio looks. As long as you don't need to print it big, it's so much easier than trying to take multiple images and then stitching in post.

I might also try and cool off the exposure around the sun a little bit which could make for a a more distinct starburst.

It's a good image. Try some different things and ultimately, go with what you like. :)

Thanks Eric, your right, showing up will get you something. I find sun flares fascinating and how each lens an be a bit different.

Thanks Ben - I was there for over an hour, I'll see what I have for a wider view. Yes, the red needs darkening.

Yeah cropping would be an option but I do like how the vignetting helps lead the eye, darkening the corners might help make it a stronger image. Thanks for commenting.

I think as Jeffrey said, too many imprints of Mesa Arch make you think it has to be done a certain way because everyone else did it that way. I like innovative ways to shoot an iconic image and this fits that bill. I do think the foreground is a bit too heavy and cropping it will make the image conform more to what people expect to see. Cutting the right side of the arch off keeps the viewer wondering what else is out there and adds interest. Just my two cents, Zeph.
