Milky Way Moonrise

We were on vacation last week as a family, and that usually means very little camera time...but its good and dark down on the coast and if the skies allow it, I will try to shoot a little night sky when I am there. Two nights before I noticed that the moon was rising pretty late and might be cool on the horizon with the MW high in the sky...so when it was more clear two nights later I went out and shot a few frames. Its less about the Milky Way as it is about the overall scene...I have never photographed conditions like this. So it was fun.

I like this a lot Travis! It doesn't always have to be where the Milky Way is the focus, we have perhaps become a bit too spoiled with that. The Milky Way can play a supporting cast very nicely as you have shown here. One of the things that I like in this is the movement of the grasses. Usually that will not be appealing, but the motion is just enough to help tell the story. I think everything works together here real well.

Your photo here has given me an idea that perhaps some future Fridays Focus will be on photos that have the Milky Way as a supporting role in the night sky and not the main role.

Its pretty interesting that you point out the moving sea oats...a friend of mine liked them for the movement they imparted on the scene...I liked them because it breaks up the static nature of a still photograph. Thanks for the kind words. That sounds like a very interesting Friday Focus subject...I wonder how many folks have an image that fits..

I like the scene - and would not be unhappy about having shot it myself. An interesting combination of elements.
Thanks Alan, no greater compliment I can think of...thank you very much.

Hey Travis,

I think we were out shooting moonrise on the same night. I like how the Milky Way mixes in with the clouds like an extra little prize.
