Milky Way Pano from the Arches National Park

Hi y'all

Three weeks ago I was in the Arches National Park, it was a lucky night for me: the sky was clear, I could raise my hand & touch the stars. in the cold & crispy air, I managed to grab some quick shots for a nice Winter Solstice Milky Way Pano.

The Sony 14mm was quite handy to get the full arch in a single row, I have never seen such beautiful winter night sky; especailly after 2 weeks of WET weather in California.

What a great image Oliver. It's nice when the Milky Way is low enough to do a single row pano. You got some really great detail in the Milky Way!

And it's awesome in so many areas in Utah where yeah, it feels like you can reach up and touch the stars. The only thing I would have done different was to not have included the parking lot in it. Did you do that for DOF, so that the ground layer would be in focus too? Your processing though is good since it keeps the ground layer darker, so the parking lot doesn't really jump out at you, so that helps to hide it. I know at first view it was the Milky Way that grabbed my eye, not the ground, so did well to mitigate the parking lot.

Alan, thank you. Yup, two more storms will pound the west coast, we are bracing for the extreme weather, there will be a lot of water falls this year, also possible bad flooding.

That is a beautiful image Oliver. I'm so inexperienced with this area of photography that it looks like magic to me. Sounds like it was a magical evening for you. Loved your description.

Thanks Jim. I appreciate your feedback, this is one of the occasions I really miss my RRS Pano Gimbal ; normally with that set up, I could easily handle any set up, get all the pano frames stitched perfectly; the travel tripod I used was light & handy, but the ballhead came up short with nodal slide.

I took the shots in the Firy Furnace area, the NPS closed the trails in that part due to the heavy snow, idealy I would like to go a bit further east to get some "meaningful" foreground.

Thinking back, I think I would just go for the pure milkyway next time.

Hi Trent, thanks, getting the milky way shot is not too difficult, the hard part is getting the nice, clear night sky.
